The grade threes have been learning about different types or genres of literature. Most recently, we had an opportunity to explore the non-fiction side of the world. This includes informational, biography, autobiography and memoir. The focus last week was on an informational book entitled, "A Day at the Pumpkin Patch". Students used the information they had read to create a Diagram of a Pumpkin.

We concluded the month of September and the theme of sunflowers with works of art inspired by Vincent van Gogh's piece entitled, "Fourteen Sunflowers in a Vase". Students observed a display of sunflowers in a vase and then proceeded to create a still-life of their own.

Here are a few examples of their work.

Words Have Power!

We read a book entitled, "The Word Collector" by Peter H. Reynolds about a boy named Jerome who collected many different types of words. He eagerly collected more and more of his favourite words. His collection grew so large that he began organizing the words into categories. He learned that... "the more words he knew, the more clearly he could share with the world what he was thinking, feeling and dreaming." One day Jerome decided to share his word collections with the world. This made him very happy!

The grade threes were inspired by Jerome to start their own word collection.

Try listening to "The Word Collector" and starting a collection of your own.

September Sunflowers

Integrating various subject areas into a set of lessons is an effective means of delivering curricular content. This year the grade threes will be engaged in a "Plant of the Month" activity. September's plant is the sunflower.

Students will:
  • listen to and view a fiction book
  • list facts gathered from a non-fiction book while learning about the life cycle of the sunflower
  • create an image inspired by Vincent van Gogh's piece entitled, "Fourteen Sunflowers in a Vase"
After reading "The Sunflower Sword" by Mark Sperring and Miriam Latimer, students were engaged in a discussion of
"Why do authors write fiction books?"

Many insightful ideas were presented. In summary we agreed that Mark Sperring wanted us to learn about
How an enemy can become a friend.

The following are representations from the book and from students lives.

Welcome back to a new school year. We have just completed our first week. We were all happy to see one another after such a long absence. Along with the excitement comes worry of what this school year will bring. To help us to cope with these challenges, the grade threes have been reminded to... "Bee Growth Minded". Students learned that our words can change our thinking and that our thinking can guide our behavior choices. Let's all pollinate a positive mind set as we learn and grow together.

This year the grade three’s became MAPLES.

     Maturing
           Adventurous
    Patriotic
Loyal
        Empathetic
    Students

This theme has been infused into all aspects of our learning. We were inspired by, “The Important Book”, written by Margaret Wise Brown. After reflecting on the concept of Canadian citizenship, students wrote a page of their own. The written work was enhanced by a pencil sketch of a pressed maple leaf.

The Important Thing…

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that I get to see maple leaves. I see them everywhere. I sketch them. I write stories and poems about them. I put them in a book. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that I see maple leaves.

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we have freedom. Freedom has so much meaning. Freedom means no war. Freedom is doctors to help sicknesses. Freedom is schools. Freedom is nature and fresh air to breath. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we have freedom.

The important thing about Canadian citizens is that we are all different. There are different ages, different cultures and different religions. But the most important thing about Canadian citizens is that we are all different… and we all get along well together.

The important thing about Canadian citizens is that we are peaceful. In Canada there is no war. People from different countries are welcome. Families are safe. They have shelter, good food and water. But the important thing about Canadian citizens is that we are peaceful.

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we have freedom. Our ancestors fought in war to keep our freedom. We have the freedom to think and say what we want. We have the freedom to vote for our leaders. We have the freedom to go to any church we choose. We have the freedom to walk safely in our community and to drive anywhere in Canada. We can leave the country to visit family or go on vacation. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we have freedom.

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we live in the north. It is cold. We wear parkas, ski pants, mittens, hats and scarves to keep warm. We throw snowballs and build forts and snowmen. We play winter sports like hockey, curling and sledding. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we live in the north.

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we know about hockey. Hockey is a popular sport in Canada. In fact, it is our national sport. Almost everyone plays it in Canada. There are 7 Canadian hockey teams that play in the NHL, the National Hockey League. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we know about hockey.

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we know about beavers. A beaver’s name in French is castor. A beaver is always working on a house or lodge. Beavers’ houses are made out of wood. It is hard for beavers to carry mud. A baby beaver is called a kit. A baby beaver snuggles close to its mother. A baby beaver learns to swim the day that it is born. Beavers love water. A beaver’s favourite food is aspen leaves. Beavers are scared of humans. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we know about beavers.

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that you have love. Love is very important to a Canadian citizen. Love is family and friends. Love is how we live. Without love we are nothing. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that you have love.
