This theme has been infused into all aspects of our learning. We were inspired by, “The Important Book”, written by Margaret Wise Brown. After reflecting on the concept of Canadian citizenship, students wrote a page of their own. The written work was enhanced by a pencil sketch of a pressed maple leaf.

The Important Thing…

The important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that I get to see maple leaves. I see them everywhere. I sketch them. I write stories and poems about them. I put them in a book. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that I see maple leaves.

We have the freedom to vote for our leaders. We have the freedom to go to any church we choose. We have the freedom to walk safely in our community and to drive anywhere in Canada. We can leave the country to visit family or go on vacation. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we have freedom.

We throw snowballs and build forts and snowmen. We play winter sports like hockey, curling and sledding. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we live in the north.

Beavers’ houses are made out of wood. It is hard for beavers to carry mud. A baby beaver is called a kit. A baby beaver snuggles close to its mother. A baby beaver learns to swim the day that it is born. Beavers love water. A beaver’s favourite food is aspen leaves. Beavers are scared of humans. But the important thing about being a Canadian citizen is that we know about beavers.
